Emery Kolb would not like drilling and development in our Protected Areas!
Political Action in the Grand Canyon!!

What would Emery think?
Ed Abbey would not go quietly!

Act Now! more than ever!

The best way to be heard is to write letters or call directly regarding the issues of the day.
Emails work too! Send them not only to support environmental causes, but to tell the opposition to change their path!

Actions ... what you can do right now!
  • Call or email the White House at 202-456-1111 and ask President Bush to support Utah Wilderness.
  • Call or email concerning the increase of user fees in National Parks, Forests, and BLM land.
  • Are you sick and tired of all that aircraft noise? Are you tired of waiting for a river permit forever because the commercials have priority? Did you have a helpful ranger? Email or write the Superintendent of Grand Canyon National Park at Joe_Alston or GRCA_Superintendent@nps.gov

Do you know of concerns that should be included here? Please email mike@grandcanyontreks.org

Call the White House, Gale Norton, and Congress!!
In order to counter the pro-development calls and to put pressure directly on the offices of decision makers, please call the White House, Secretary Norton's offices, and Congress. Let them know you favor protecting unique national treasures, and that our National Monuments and Wilderness lands are far more valuable preserved for future generations, not developed for their minuscule fossil fuel potential.  Tell them not to revise or weaken our National Monuments, not to release our Wilderness Study Areas to the oil industry, and that if anything the Wilderness Study Area boundaries should be Increased.

Interior Secretary Gale Norton (202) 208-7351
U.S. Congress Hot line (202) 224-3121 (just ask them to patch you through to the Senator or Representative you seek)

For more detailed reading on these issues, go over to The Wilderness Society's website at http://www.wilderness.org and click the side bar titled "Interior's Draft Report calls for Oil Drilling on Millions of Acres of National Lands."  There, you can read the entire draft report and add some additional facts & figures to your letter.  THANK YOU for acting to prevent
oil wells and coal mines in our dwindling wilderness!

Unfortunately email messages to Congress carry almost no weight -- letters and phone calls are the most effective way to reach them. A clearly thought out letter, limited to just one topic,  is what it takes to get their attention.  The more letters and the more Senators or Congressperson who receive letters, the better.
